<p>Fleas are a common pest, especially in a home with a pet&nbsp;cat or dog, so it is not unusual to have a problem with them from time to time. Understanding more about fleas and their life cycle will help greatly in effectively eradicating them from the&nbsp;home.</p>
<p>The flea life cycle has four stages: egg, larvae pupa and adult. Fleas can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to many months to reach the adult stage depending on conditions. An adult female flea can lay 40 eggs a day (that’s 2,000 eggs in one fleas lifetime!) meaning that flea infestations can quickly get out of control.</p>
<p>Fleas need warm and humid conditions to thrive. To develop and survive fleas need humidity of 50% + and temperatures between 13 – 34°C. This is why fleas are less of a pest in winter and start to become a problem&nbsp;in spring!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fleas only spend one quarter of their life on the host animal. This means that effective treatment must be applied to the whole affected home to treat the infestation completely. Fleas can also survive a long time without a food source to it is wise to treat all rooms of the&nbsp;house, even if pets may not have been in there for a while.</p>
<p>Fleas are a known spreader of disease so it is important for the health reasons that infestations are dealt with quickly.</p>

<p>Adult fleas are around 1-2 mm long and reddish brown in colour. They are very flat insects making them hard to spot in an animal’s fur. Quite often the first signs of fleas are pets scratching more often than usual or noticing bites on yourself, especially around the ankles.</p>
<p>Look in the fur of pets to see if any fleas can be spotted, use a special flea comb which is designed to catch these thin insects. Another way to confirm if there is a flea infestation is to <a href="/product/sticky-insect-trap.html">lay down traps.</a> Adult fleas are attracted to light so if you can place a light near the trap soon fleas should be attracted, if you have them.</p>

<h4>Vacuuming</h4>
<p>Spend some quality time with the&nbsp;vacuum cleaner. Vacuums are great for sucking up fleas in all stages of their life cycle. Not only that but vacuuming removes the fleas food source so that the larvae finds it harder to mature. Regular vacuuming can really help keep fleas at bay so try and do it as often as possible.</p>
<p>Fleas can lie dormant for a long time as eggs, and are roused into hatching by heat and vibrations. The vibrations of the vacuum cleaner should encourage fleas out, which is great for sucking up as many as possible!</p>
<p><strong>Top Tip:</strong> Always empty the vacuum cleaner as soon as you are finished, preferably into a sealed bag and into an outdoor bin. Otherwise fleas may just crawl back out of your vacuum cleaner!</p>
<p><strong>Vacuum all flooring;</strong> including carpets, rugs, vinyl and hard flooring. Pay special attention to skirting boards, nooks and crannies and try to get underneath furniture as well. Flea larvae dislikes light so will hide in dark areas.</p>
<p><strong>Vacuum furniture;</strong> vacuum sofas, including under cushions and in any seams. Any other soft furnishings should also be vacuumed i.e. armchairs, headboards and fabric covered bed bases.</p>
<h4>Washing</h4>
<p>Because we know that fleas cannot survive in temperatures above 35°C, a hot wash or cycle in the tumble dryer is a good way to kill fleas in clothes and bedding. Try to be systematic in treating washables so that clean clothes are kept sealed in bags until the house is treated, or uncleaned clothes are kept in sealed bags if the house has been treated.</p>

<p>Fleas are hard to eradicate in just one treatment so keep treating and cleaning until the problem is solved. Most pets spend time outside, meaning fleas can be re-introduced into the house. They can even be transported in on humans from long grass or other infested areas. Early detection makes killing fleas easier!</p>
<p>Keep up with vacuuming, at least once a week, and comb through pets fur. It is a good idea to keep this up through the seasons fleas like the best (spring and summer in the UK).</p>

How to Get Rid of Fleas

<p><em>Cimex lectularius – the common bed bug</em></p>
<p>In the early 1940s bedbugs were nearly eradicated in the developed world, but since 1995 they are seeing a resurgence. This is due to a number of reasons including bed bug resistance to pesticides, bans on effective pesticides and increasing international travel.</p>
<p>They prefer to feed on human blood, although they have been known to feed on other animals as well. Bedbugs are nocturnal so will usually feed at night. Feeding can take from 3 – 12 minutes and takes place every 14 days. If bedbug bites become itchy antihistamines can help, a pharmacist should be able to recommend a treatment.</p>
<p>While it is distressing to find bedbugs they are not known as transmitters of disease. Bedbugs are not attracted to dirt or dirty people. They can be found in any type&nbsp;of home and are expert hitchhikers.</p>
<p>Bedbugs can live up to 12 months. In that time female bedbugs can lay 200-500 eggs. Bedbugs have several life stages: egg, nymph and adult. Bedbug eggs cannot be killed using any home treatment chemical. This means that at least two treatments of your home may be necessary as eggs present when you did the first treatment hatch.</p>

<p>Although called bed bugs, these pests do not live exclusively in beds. Bed bugs will happily travel 5 – 20 feet from where they can feed to their hiding place. <p>The best way to detect bedbugs is to look in areas where they could be hiding. It is a good idea to check for bedbugs at home when changing your sheets and also if you are staying away from home. It is useful to have a bright torch when looking for bedbugs.</p>
<p><strong>What to look out for:</strong></p>
<p>• Rusty stains on the sheets</p>
<p>• Bed bug excrement – a small, dark spot</p>
<p>• Eggs, eggshells and pale yellow nymph skins which are shed by juvenile bedbugs</p>

<p>• A sign of bed bug infestation can be a smell of squashed raspberries or almonds in the room or around the mattress.</p>
<p><strong>Where to look:</strong></p>
<p>• The bed – a good place to start looking is around the bed. Check piping around the mattress edges, seams and labels sewn on to the mattress, the headboard and bed frame.</p>
<p>• Check draw joints, especially in bedside tables.</p>
<p>• Walls – check any gaps around the skirting board, under loose wallpaper or wall hangings.</p>
<p>• Sofas and chairs – check seams, frames and under cushions.</p>
<p>• Electrical receptacles and appliances</p>
<p>Bedbugs are about the width of a credit card, so they can hide in very small spaces, even in the head of a screw. If you can slide the edge of a credit card into a crack, a bedbug could be hiding there.</p>
<p>Sometimes the first sign of bedbugs is noticing bite marks on the skin. They look a bit like mosquito bites and are found on any skin that is exposed while sleeping. The bites are usually in a straight line. Everyone is effected differently by bedbug bites. While some people show almost no sign of being bitten others come up in painful rashes and blisters (part of an allergic reaction).</p>

<p>•&nbsp;Items that cannot be put in the dryer&nbsp;can be put in the freezer. Make sure the freezer is set to -18°C or colder and the items are left in the freezer for at least four days.</p>
<p>•&nbsp;Vacuuming can help to remove bugs (although you will not get the ones that are hiding). Make sure to vacuum crevices and seams in mattresses/furniture where bedbugs like to hide. Empty the vacuum as soon as you are done into a sealed bag and dispose of immediately.</p>

<h4>Safe and Effective Furnishing Removal: Avoiding Bed Bug Spread</h4>
<p>With the right treatment process you can save thousands and avoid replacing expensive furnishings. Carrying mattresses and other furniture out of an infected area poses a high risk of bed bugs dropping or falling off the item in other areas of the home. If you feel it is necessary to discard furniture completely, wrap the item using large wide stretch wrap usually found in the moving section of your local hardware store or inside air-tight plastic bags. Alternatively, using the resources already within the home or available at the local store, cling film can be used to help wrap and transport to a local waste site. Please be cautious that mattress bags have small holes and bed bugs will crawl out.</p>

<p>Prevention can be difficult as bed bugs can be easily transported without being noticed. Here are a few tips for reducing the chances of a bed bug infestation:</p>

<p>• Avoid buying second hand furniture, especially mattresses or beds. Any second hand furniture that is bought should be thoroughly inspected before being brought into the home.</p>
<p>• If using a shared washing machine/dryer area take clothes there in a plastic bag. Once washed clothes should then be put straight back into the bag to be folded at home. If taking bedbug infested clothes to the laundromat&nbsp;use a different&nbsp;bag to take your clean clothes back home.</p>
<p>• De-clutter your home. Reducing the hiding places for bugs will make them easier to spot and make any future treatments much easier.</p>

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

There are several species of moth in the UK which can cause damage to textiles and carpets. One thing that all these moths have in common is that the adult moths are not the ones that cause damage. Damage occurs when the moth larvae/ or caterpillars eat clothes fibres or use them to form cocoons. If adult moths are seen then that could mean that their fabric eating offspring are nearby.<br><br>

Moth caterpillars eat mostly natural fibres including wool, fur and feathers, silk, cashmere, even natural bristle brushes! Natural fibres contain keratin which is the moth’s main source of protein. If you see moths making holes in man made fibres it is likely they were just cutting through it to get to something tastier!<br><br>

Moths are attracted to clothes containing moisture, especially things like sweat, urine, spilled food etc. which can give them other nutrients as well as water.<br><br>

Although most active in the spring and summer, they can be seen all year round in warm houses.<br><br>

<h3>How to Spot Moths</h3>
<p>There are a few things to look out for if there is a suspected moth problem:</p>

<li>Holes in clothing, especially clothing made of natural fibres like wool, silk or fur.</li>
<li>Damage to carpets</li>
<li>Clothing looks dusty or discoloured and has a musty smell</li>
<li>Webbing in the wardrobe</li>
<li>Discarded cocoons made of a fibrous material</li>
</ul>

<p>If a moth infestation is suspected then it can be a good idea to set a trap. Set a sticky trap in the wardrobe and wait to see what gets stuck. Moths are attracted to fish oil, so adding a dab of this can increase the effectiveness of the trap.</p>

<p>Turns from egg to adult in around 6 weeks. This can take up to 18 months if conditions are not right for the moth! Female moths lay eggs in clusters of 30-200 where they think there will be a supply of moisture and suitable food.

Adults are 6-8mm long with strongly fringed straw coloured wings. Adults do not feed and avoid the light. The common clothes moth prefers to crawl rather than fly. Once adult moths have mated (male) or laid eggs (female) they will die.</p>

<h3>How to kill moths</h3>
<h4>Catch them</h4>
<p>Place <a href="/insect-sticky-trap-st11.html"><b>traps</b></a> where moths are a problem. Add a dab of fish oil to the Critterkill insect traps, as moths are attracted to it. A good place to get some fish oil is from a tin of tuna or salmon.</p>

<h4>Killing Moths in the wardrobe</h4>
<p>Wash all clothes and textiles that can be put in the washing machine. This will get rid of any eggs that may have been laid on them. If possible also put the clothes through a hot dryer. Items that cannot be put in a clothes dryer can be put in the freezer for a few days which will also kill any eggs. Once the wardrobe is emptied out give it a good scrub. Moths eggs can be stuck to surfaces so a sponge scrubber is ideal for dislodging them (make sure it won’t damage your furniture though!) Really get in all the crevices and corners as this is where moths like to hide.</p>

<h4>Killing moths in the carpet</h4>
<p>Just like tackling fleas, vacuuming is a great weapon against moths. A high powered vacuum cleaner can suck up and kill moth eggs and larvae.</p>

<h4>Sprays & Smoke Bombs Treatment</h4>
<ul>
<li>Check for signs of moths in all rooms of the house. Infestations can spread from room to room and it is important to treat every room that is affected, all rooms in close proximity and preferably the whole house.</li>
<li>Hoover everywhere thoroughly and then remove contents from hoover out of the house. The vibration from the hoover can also start the hatching process which is very important as product does not kill eggs.</li>
<li>Remove and wash any bedding or soft furnishings on the hottest wash suitable.</li>
<li>Spray thoroughly paying extra attention to the dark corners and any cracks or holes. Once dry, proceed with the smoke bombs.</li>
<li>Do not hoover between treatments as this will remove the residue.</li>
<li>After 7 days, hoover and re-treat. Due to the life cycle and the fact that products are unable to penetrate the eggs/cocoons retreatment needs to applied. Continue until all signs of infestation have gone.</li>
</ul>


<h3>Monitoring and Prevention of Moths</h3>
<h4>Protecting Clothes From Moths</h4>
<p>Don’t hang up anything that has been worn in your wardrobe. Moths are very attracted to clothing that has food stains, bodily fluids such as sweat, or any kind of moisture. Certain clothes that cannot be washed can be brushed to dislodge any stow away moth eggs, or better yet be dry cleaned.
Protect items that are not used often, such as wool jumpers in the summer, in airtight containers. Vacuum sealed bags and plastic boxes with lids are ideal for this. You can buy special plastic bags to go over coat hangers which will protect your wool or delicate items when you are using them more often. Before storing clothes make sure there are no moths, larvae or eggs on them!</p>

<h4>Dry Them Out</h4>
<p>Moths like to lay eggs in warm, moist environments, so to discourage moths keep things dry and cool. Special dehumidifiers for wardrobes can be bought which may help the problem. If you can keep humidity in your home to 50% or lower it will discourage many insects, including moths.
